Packing Essentials For A City Break

As you may remember from our New Year’s Resolutions blog post, we’re going big with the travel this year. With Spring approaching, there’s no time like to present to get planning your next weekend away. Whether you need to get rid of your holiday allowance before they reset in April, or you’re simply one of those smart cookies who prefer to plan ahead, here are your packing essentials for a city break.

  1. A good backpack will save the day (and your shoulders)

Let’s start with a good, sturdy backpack. You want something spacious, comfortable, and ideally secure. Your mode of travel may impact which backpack is best for you to travel with, for example if you’re taking a flight you may be limited to a smaller bag that can fit under your seat. Whereas if you’re travelling by train or bus, you can probably get away with something a bit bigger that can be stowed away in the luggage compartment.

2. Block out the haters (and the natural light) with a good eye-mask

You can’t go wrong with a good eye-mask and a sound set of earplugs. Perhaps you’re staying in a hostel with snoring bunk mates, or your Airbnb might be located next to the strip. Better to be prepared as we like to say!

3. Stay hydrated with your water bottle

Don’t forget your water bottle!! Many cities have free public water fountains, or you can simply fill up at your accommodation before you leave. This ensures you can always stay hydrated whilst saving the planet (and your purse) at the same time. Every little helps.

4. Coffee on the go?

This one isn’t necessarily a basic need, but we find it to be a great added comfort. Travel coffee mugs! Don’t get us wrong, grabbing a hot drink at a local coffee shop is part of the experience and there’s nothing better. However, if you’re on a budget, this little trick can save you a few pounds. Chances are your hotel has a complimentary coffee machine somewhere, so why not take a cappuccino to go? Genius if we do say so ourselves.

5. Power on the go

This one goes without saying in this day and age. Portable chargers should be at the top of any travel packing list, they’re lightweight and convenient so you never have to worry about your phone losing battery from all the cool pictures you’re taking from your trip! Just don’t forget to charge it before you leave.

6. Offline maps are the way forward

Here’s a nifty little trick. Did you know the Google Maps app lets you download city maps so that you can still find your way around even when you aren’t connected to Wi-Fi, or if you’re abroad with no phone service? Pin your hotel details and any other key locations on the map whilst you do have access to the internet, to make sure you can always find your way whilst offline.

7. Scarf turned blanket turned pillow

If you’re travelling in England, chances are there’s no point in trying to predict the weather forecast. Even if your app is saying pure sun for a week, you should always be prepared for a bit of drizzle (especially if you’re visiting Manchester). That’s why we love to travel with a thick, cosy scarf that can double up as a blanket for the journey, protection from the rain, or even as an extra pillow if needs be. Trust us with this one.

Last but not least…

8. Hand-san it up to get rid of any germs

If Covid-19 taught us anything, it’s the importance of carrying a mini hand-san with us everywhere we go. We love these tiny hand sanitisers, small enough to fit in your liquid bag at the airport but big enough to sort you out throughout the duration of your trip. Health is wealth after all.

Planning a city break to Manchester anytime soon?

In case you missed it, Manchester made Lonely Planet’s “Top Destinations To Visit In 2023” list back in October last year. We know we’re biased, but we can’t recommend it enough – the heart of the North and all that. Plus, if you’re looking for a place to stay, we have the best serviced apartments available in Manchester (again, definitely not biased). Check out The Jacksonheim Boutique to browse our luxurious and unique apartments located in the heart of the city.
