When it comes to transforming a bathroom, tiles do all the talking. From bold patterns to soft neutrals, the tiles you choose can set the tone for the entire space. At Studio Heim, we’re currently obsessed with some fresh trends that are making waves in the world of bathroom design. Here’s a peek at how you can rethink your tile game and create a bathroom that’s anything but basic.
Small format and accent tiles
You don’t need to rely on medium or large format tiles to give a sleek and polished feel in your bathroom. We love experimenting with unexpected tile configurations to add a dynamic touch to bathroom walls and floors. Why not opt for smaller tiles to really bring your bathroom to life – get creative!
Think herringbone, stacked vertical, or even chevron layouts—these shapes can completely change the flow of a space. Adding some Kit Kat tiles into an otherwise all monochromatic room will still bring some dimension to an otherwise simple and elegant design.
Kit Kat Tiles
Kit Kat tiles in particular are currently a crowd favourite, carrying a very versatile look that can bring anything from the earthiness of traditional Japanese design, to the quirkiness of a more “Mid Century” and retro concept. Our favourite use of Kit Kat tiles has been in our curved bathroom renovations – see below!
Pro tip: Playing with colour as well as size can be a really exciting way to get creative with your tile choices. Switch up the layout to make it pop without overwhelming the room.
Playing with textures and colours
With a million and one options for a textured and bold look, we really love using tiles that create bold and unique patterns.
Neutrals are timeless, but why not push the boundaries a bit? At the moment, we’re all about soothing pastels, rich terracotta, and deep, moody blues and greens. These shades bring personality to your bathroom while still feeling calm and serene. Pair them with contrasting grout to make the colours sing, or keep it tonal for a more subtle, chic vibe.
Colour combination inspo: Sage green tiles with blush pink accents, or bold navy with crisp white grout for a dramatic contrast.
Terrazzo and terrazzo effect tiles are growing increasingly popular, often being used in large formats to create dynamic and intriguing floor textures. We frequently use these tiles in both bold colours and neutrals, and love the vibrancy they add to any room! We have planned to use terrazzo tiles across all the bathrooms in our latest/ upcoming renovation project, using them as half height wall tiles, floor tiles and even as a tile skirt. We love how versatile they are!
Printed tiles are a lovely way to play with block colours and to allow plain tiles to form the pattern for you, as can be seen in our Soho apartment below.
Texture and Organic Shapes
Adding texture is a brilliant way to bring depth to an otherwise flat surface. We’re loving textured tiles—whether they’re handcrafted ceramics or tiles with a subtle wave or ripple. These textures can evoke a natural, spa-like feel in your bathroom, adding a tactile quality that softens the space.
If you’re after a more playful approach, consider organic shapes. These irregular forms feel inspired by nature and give off a relaxed, effortless look that’s perfect for a contemporary yet cosy bathroom.
Coloured grout
It’s official: coloured grout is having a moment. We have seen a huge rise in people getting creative with their colour choices of grout – and have noticed our suppliers now stocking bigger arrays of unique colours to cater to the market demand for more unique choices! We love the bold contract this can create within bathrooms, adding depth, and highlighting the lines in-between tile placements, rather than trying to conceal them.
We love how a contrasting or complementary grout can create depth and interest, elevating even the most simple of tiles. A soft blush grout against white tiles, or a bold black grout with neutral tiles, creates a subtle drama that can transform your bathroom from ordinary to extraordinary.
Tiles are more than just a functional bathroom feature—they’re the foundation of your bathroom’s entire look and feel. Whether you’re playing with bold colours, organic shapes, or unique textures, now’s the perfect time to get creative with your tile choices. At Studio Heim, we’re always on the hunt for fresh ideas that elevate every space. Ready to make your bathroom a design statement? Let’s get tiling!
