Global travel book guide Lonely Planet has unveiled its top destinations to visit in 2023, and incredibly Manchester made the cut as one of the top 30 places to visit next year. Each year, the travel guide compiles a list of the places, cities, and countries that it recommends its readers visit, dividing its recommendations into various categories. Manchester is listed under the category ‘Learn,’ which encourages tourists to visit destinations where learning is the best memento.
Astonishingly, Manchester is the only UK city to feature in the Best in Travel 2023 list. Other cities selected by Lonely Planet include Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Marseille in France, and Sydney in Australia. Every year, nominations from Lonely Planet’s enormous community of workers, writers, bloggers, publishing partners, and others serve as the basis for the Best in Travel 2023 rankings. Its panel of travel industry professionals evaluates the nominations, narrowing the field of applicants to just 30 places. Every single one was picked for its relevance, distinctive experiences, “wow” factor, and continued dedication to sustainability, community, and diversity.
Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, announced: “It’s great news for Manchester that trusted global travel experts Lonely Planet are singing the city’s praises as a must-visit place in 2023. This prestigious accolade is a further demonstration that we are making our mark on the world stage.
“Tourism creates and supports jobs and other opportunities for Manchester people and is an important part of our economy. The array of attractions, many of which are free to visit, is something our residents can also enjoy.
“When Lonely Planet says there is something for everyone here, it’s the result of long-term planning and partnership. We’re proud to be the only UK city on this list.”

From the upcoming reopening of Manchester Museum to the incoming Factory International, and not forgetting the newly-opened Castlefield Viaduct – it’s no wonder Lonely Planet expertly hand-selected Manchester as one of the top destinations to visit in 2023.
Tom Hall, Vice President at Lonely Planet, said: “Everyone at Lonely Planet is thrilled to have Manchester included in Best in Travel 2023. Manchester’s urban dynamism combined with a fascinating history and cultural scene makes it an exciting pick.”
“It’s a city to experience, not just visit, so our suggested itineraries have also flagged up live music, great places to eat and drink and street art tours, and much more.”
