How can I incorporate my love for travel into my home's design?

Infusing your love for travel into your home’s design can turn your living space into a vibrant reflection of your life’s journeys. The key to achieving this lies in the art of ‘gathering’ rather than simply ‘sourcing’. The beauty of travel lies in its ability to immerse us in diverse cultures, traditions, and experiences. By selecting unique pieces during your travels, you can bring a slice of these experiences back home, turning them into design elements that tell a story.

Remember, creating a balanced and authentic home doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process of curation over time, a labor of love that mirrors your evolution as a traveler. Try not to rush this process; instead, enjoy the journey of gradually filling your home with pieces that are meaningful to you. Over time, your home will become a beautifully curated testament to your travels, reading like a well-thumbed book filled with tales of your adventures.

How could I subtly incorporate my favorite colour without overwhelming the room?

Incorporating your favorite colour into your home’s design can be an expression of your personal style, and it doesn’t have to be overpowering. There are many subtle yet effective ways to infuse a room with a splash of your favorite colour without overwhelming the overall aesthetic.

Soft furnishings are a wonderful place to start. Incorporating items like scatter cushions, throws, rugs, or curtains in your preferred hue can add a colorful touch to your space. These elements are versatile and can be interchanged easily as per your mood, season, or whenever you feel like refreshing your decor.

Decorative items offer another way of introducing your favorite colour. Consider selecting vases, picture frames, artwork, or even coffee table books in the shade you love. Not only do these elements help disperse color throughout the room, but they also add a personal touch without requiring a major commitment like painting walls or buying large pieces of furniture.

How can I bring more of the outdoors inside?

Embracing the outdoors within your interior design can help create a tranquil, refreshing environment that brings the tranquility of nature into your home. While the most obvious route to achieve this is through the addition of indoor plants, there are several other ways to amplify the presence of nature in your space.

A key strategy is incorporating natural and raw materials into your design. For instance, hardwood flooring not only adds a warm, inviting touch but also mirrors the natural textures and tones found outdoors. Furniture or accent pieces made from materials like bamboo or rattan can also evoke an organic, outdoorsy feel, adding a layer of texture and visual interest.

Fabrics play a vital role too. Consider using linens and other earthy fabrics for your upholstery, curtains, or beddings. These materials, with their natural fibers and raw finishes, can contribute to a calming, grounded ambiance reminiscent of serene outdoor settings.

In terms of color, shades inspired by nature can reinforce the outdoorsy vibe. While you may not want to paint everything green, consider using a palette that reflects the outdoors, from the rich greens of foliage and blues of the sky or water, to earthy browns, neutrals, or even floral hues.

If you could design a room around one unusual centerpiece, what would it be?

If I were given the opportunity to design a room around an unusual centerpiece, I would choose a sunken sofa area, often referred to as a ‘conversation pit’. This unique feature, deeply embedded in the floor of the living area, makes a bold statement while encouraging intimate, face-to-face interaction amongst guests – a refreshing change from the typical living room layouts that are centered around a TV.

The conversation pit is a mid-century phenomenon that rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s. As the name suggests, it’s designed to stimulate conversation and foster a sense of community within the home. Unlike more traditional living room furniture arrangements, a conversation pit creates an immersive, inclusive space that invites people to gather, connect, and engage with each other.

This feature, while vintage in origin, can be seamlessly incorporated into a range of design aesthetics, from mid-century modern to contemporary. By pairing the sunken sofa area with carefully chosen lighting, cushions, and a complementary color palette, we can create a warm, welcoming, and intriguing living space that not only serves as a striking centerpiece but also as a catalyst for meaningful social interactions in the home.

At Interiors by Jacksonheim, we strive to create environments that not only provide comfort but also speak to the aesthetic tastes of our guests. Each of our apartments is thoughtfully designed, taking inspiration from the latest trends in interior design. By integrating these chic and stylish colour combinations, we hope to offer a space that feels like a luxurious home away from home.
